At the appointment x-rays will be taken to determine the depth of the jawbone. There needs to be at least 3 mm of bone to do a successful implant. If more bone is needed a bone grafting procedure will be done before proceeding further. There will then be a healing time after this. Implants are great to use to fill in the space of a missing tooth. Instead of grinding down the adjacent teeth the dentist just prepares the space that needs repair. This is so much better than involving other teeth just to fix one. The implant mimics the size and shape of the natural tooth. The steel posts are put in to replace the roots of the tooth. If the tooth is a posterior tooth it will have four canals in the root. So more steel posts will be needed. If a front anterior tooth is replaced only one or two posts are needed.
These steel posts will be placed carefully into your jaw bone. This needs time to set up. Usually this takes from three to six months. There are two sizes of posts that can be used for this procedure. The standard post is good for larger mouths or molars in the back of the mouth. There is also the mini posts that are good for smaller mouths and anterior or front teeth. When getting dental implants Kingston or elsewhere do ask the dentist about the choice of steel implant posts. The healing time varies according to the size so if this is a factor for you its something to consider.
