What is Floss and What is it for?
Floss is a cord made of nylon or teflon filaments rolled up in a small plastic box and used to clean between the teeth. Flossing dislodges food particles, decreases bacteria in the mouth, and reduces plaque; that sticky film that builds up on your teeth, and causes decay and gum disease. Flossing, proper brushing, and regular dental care at Your Dental Office in Toronto, or Etobicoke, are critical for good dental health.
How to Choose the Right Dental Floss
Choosing the right dental floss is largely a matter of personal preference, but there are some things to consider to make sure you get the floss that's best for you:
-
1. If the space between your teeth is tight, something like a super floss or floss tape would be best.
- 2. If your teeth are super close, try waxed floss since it is easier to slide in small spaces.
- 3. If you hate wrapping floss around your fingers or changing the floss multiple times, consider using pre-measured strands of floss or disposable flossers.
- 4. If you have braces or bridges, you may want to try a water flosser or ortho flossers.
How to Use Dental Floss
To be effective, flossing must be done properly, or gums and teeth could be harmed.
Step 1: Holding about 30cm of floss, wrap all but 5cm around your middle fingers and hold it tightly between thumb and middle fingers.
Step 2: Place the dental floss between two teeth and use your index finger to guide the floss up and down using a zig-zag motion, making sure it rubs against the sides of both teeth, being careful not to cut your gums.
Step 3: When the floss touches your gum, pull it forward so it curves around front of the teeth.
Step 4: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each tooth until you have flossed between all of your teeth.
If you experience any trouble while flossing, it may be best to visit Your Dental Office, located in Toronto and Etobicoke, to voice your concerns and have a dental check-up. Contact us today to book an appointment!
